Rumors

I have a friend that believes almost everything she gets in email…everything she hears on the news, etc.  Below are rumors and false statements about Sarah Palin.  Please share them with your gullible friends too.  Add rumors you have heard that you want sleuthed or that you have dispelled here in the comments.

RUMOR TRUTH
While trolling the net for rumors, I found this tidbit on another blog.”Talk of replacing Biden with Hillary must be under discussion. I just got a follow-up survey from –William Arnone Phone: 212-999-9999 asking me if I would change my mind about voting for McCain if Biden was replaced with Hillary.”** Editor Note: I removed the phone number in case this is not fact.  Does anyone know if this is true?
Sarah Palin sought to ban books in the Library while Mayor of Wasilla, AK Per the City of Wasilla, AK – “We at the City of Wasilla have received many emails and requests for information about “banned or censored” books at the Wasilla Library while former Mayor Palin was in office. We have no records of any books being “banned or censored” ever.”  From 1986 to 2007 there were a total of 5 books challenged by “library patrons” but the name of the requesting cardholder was not released.

From Jeanne Troshynski – President Friends of Wasilla Library – “The Friends have received numerous media questions regarding the rumor that there was a list of books banned by Sarah Palin as mayor of Wasilla. I have researched all the archived Friends of Wasilla Library Board minutes from 1995-1998. I can find nothing to substantiate the theory that there was a list of books recommended to be banned by Sarah Palin.

As a Board, the Friends feel pretty passionately about the negatives of banning books. There does seem to have been some discussion about book selection and the challenge policy during the time period in question. It is my personal conclusion that the “banned list” rumor is just sensationalism.” Both of these official documents are posted on the City of Wasilla Website

Wants to teach Creationism in Schools ‘…the great novelty of Ms Palin’s candidacy is that she is the first national nominee since William Jennings Bryan a century ago to be called a “creationist” – a disbeliever in the theory of evolution. This is unfair.

Those who describe Ms Palin one exchange during the Alaska governor’s race two years ago when she said she had no objection if teachers questioned Darwin. “I say this as the daughter of a science teacher,” she said. “Don’t be afraid of information, and let kids debate both sides.” She explicitly ruled out putting creationism on school curriculums.’ Financial Times – Christopher Caldwell

Editor musings: Is teaching folklore, myths and legends in Middle Schools introducing religion and possibly beliefs into our school system?  At some point we need to stop being politically correct and use some common sense.  Censorship is not a fundamental healthy behavior.  I want my children informed so they are not lead astray.  I don’t want any religion/doctrine taught in school but banning questions about it is like banning books.  oops!

Question from c. Gibson – 70% of Americans want to ban semi-automatic weapons, do you support that?  No I will not.

Editor’s Musings: After talking to some girlfriends and knowing I know nothing about the classification of guns, I decided to do some investigation.  I get sick of hearing…we will have AK 47’s in every house in America.  This again is not rational thought or behavior.  It is a case of alarmist and fear mongering tactics of a political era many claim they don’t to see repeated. Go do your own research and make an informed decision.  See how your favorite politican voted on the Clinton Gun Ban.  Do you agree or disagree?

  1. Obama is running ads in Florida every 15 minutes saying John McCain voted AGAINST equal pay. This is the reality of how McCain rewards the performance of women and HOW OBAMA PAYS LESS!
FACT CHECK: Records Show Women Working In Obama’s Senate Office Were Paid Average Of $9,000 Less Than Men

According To Senate Records, Women Working In Obama’s Senate Office Paid An Average Of $9,000 Less Than Men, As “Obama Pays Women Just 83 Cents For Every Dollar His Men Make.” “Obama’s commitment to federally mandated pay equity stretches from the Rockies to Wall Street and beyond. And yet it seems to have eluded his Senate office. Compensation figures for his legislative staff reveal that Obama pays women just 83 cents for every dollar his men make. A watchdog group called LegiStorm posts online the salaries for Capitol Hill staffers. “We have no political affiliations and no political purpose except to make the workings of Congress as transparent as possible,” its website explains. Parsing LegiStorm’s official data, gleaned from the Secretary of the Senate, offers a fascinating glimpse at pay equity in the World’s Greatest Deliberative Body. The most recent statistics are for the half-year from Oct. 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008, excluding interns and focusing on full-time personnel. For someone who worked only until, say, last Feb. 29, extrapolating up to six months’ service simplifies this analysis. Doubling these half-year figures illustrates how a year’s worth of Senate employees’ paychecks should look. Based on these calculations, Obama’s 28 male staffers divided among themselves total payroll expenditures of $1,523,120. Thus, Obama’s average male employee earned $54,397. Obama’s 30 female employees split $1,354,580 among themselves, or $45,152, on average. Why this disparity? One reason may be the under-representation of women in Obama’s highest-compensated ranks. Among Obama’s five best-paid advisors, only one was a woman. Among his top 20, seven were women. … McCain’s 17 male staffers split $916,914, thus averaging $53,936. His 25 female employees divided $1,396,958 and averaged $55,878. On average, according to these data, women in John McCain’s office make $1.04 for every dollar a man makes. In fact, all other things being equal, a typical female staffer could earn 21 cents more per dollar paid to her male counterpart — while adding $10,726 to her annual income — by leaving Barack Obama’s office and going to work for John McCain. How could this be? One explanation could be that women compose a majority of McCain’s highest-paid aides. Among his top-five best-compensated staffers, three are women. Of his 20-highest-salaried employees, 13 are women. The Republican presidential nominee relies on women — much more than men — for advice at the highest, and thus, best-paid levels. If anyone on McCain’s Senate staff is unhappy, McCain’s male staffers might complain they seem to get a slightly raw deal.” (Deroy Murdock, Op-Ed, “Obama Only Talks Good Game On Gender Pay Equity,” Seattle Post-Intelligencer , 9/11/08)

•Columnist Deroy Murdock: “In short, these statistics suggest that John McCain is more than fair with his female employees, while Barack Obama — at the expense of the women who work for him — quietly perpetuates the very same pay-equity divide that he loudly denounces. Of all people, the Democratic standard bearer should understand that equal pay begins at home.” (Deroy Murdock, Op-Ed, “Obama Only Talks Good Game On Gender Pay Equity,” Seattle Post-Intelligencer , 9/11/08)

  2. Today’s women are mothers, professionals, small business owners, community activists, but Senator Barack Obama promises not a diverse plan for a diverse community, but one rhetorical catch-all: ‘Change.’

“Women in Florida and across our nation want a real leader who will work for stronger, healthier families, invest in our children’s future from the very beginning, and get our economy back on track so that we can create and keep high-wage, high-value jobs and buy affordable gas and groceries. We don’t want empty promises and we don’t want ‘change’ for change’s sake. We need our leaders to be mavericks who aren’t afraid to bring real change and reform the way business is done Washington, D.C.—and women know that the only two people who can do that are John McCain and Governor Sarah Palin.”
