Obama Vows to Shut Down the Coal Industry

I guess this means that Coal is not on his list of energy sources.  What does this really mean to the folks who live in the Appalachia’s?  I don’t many will hear this before Tuesday.  But see what is exposed in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle.

First the interview on how he will bankrupt the coal industry

Hidden Audio: Obama Tells SF Chronicle He Will Bankrupt Coal Industry

(Please read update about the San Francisco Chronicle neglecting to mention Obama’s willingness to bankrupt the coal industry at bottom of this blog.)

Imagine if John McCain had whispered somewhere that he was willing to bankrupt a major industry? Would this declaration not immediately be front page news? Well, Barack Obama actually flat out told the San Francisco Chronicle (SF Gate) that he was willing to see the coal industry go bankrupt in a January 17, 2008 interview. The result? Nothing. This audio interview has been hidden from the public…until now. Here is the transcript of Obama’s statement about bankrupting the coal industry (emphasis mine):

Let me sort of describe my overall policy.

What I’ve said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else’s out there.

I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.

That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, biodiesel and other alternative energy approaches.

The only thing I’ve said with respect to coal, I haven’t been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a (sic) ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can.

It’s just that it will bankrupt them.

Amazing that this statement by Obama about bankrupting the coal industry has been kept under wraps until this time.

UPDATE: NewsBusters’ Tom Blumer has found out that the San Francisco Chronicle story published on January 18 based upon this January 17 interview did not include any mention of Obama’s willingness to bankrupt the coal industry which you can hear on the audio. You can read the story here when you scroll down to the “In His Own Words” section. Way to cover up for The One, SF Chronicle!

  1. I have suspected this for a long time. I have worked in coal mining for over 34 years. Most people do not even know where their electricity comes from let alone how its produced. With Pelosi, Reed and Obama in you can be bet your sweet a– that your electric bill will go up and our energy production in these United States will be a mess. We have cleaned up coal emissions immensely and with Carbons sequestration and clean coal technology we can do more.

This does not effect just Ohio WVa and Pa. These states get over 75% of their electricty for coal. The National average is 50% . A common sense man or women will have to ask yourself why would you vote for Obama. Where is he going to get that electricity for that electrice car or to grow the economy. Smarten up people vote to cast the bum back to Chicago. He says one thing and does the other. Votes present and does not lead. This approach is with everything. Remember if is not grown its mined.

  2. The SF Chronicle says that the audio file of Obama’s interview has been posted on their site since Jan. So why didn’t they print those comments?

They are trying to spin this as old news. Who cares how old it is? It’s Obama, on tape, explaining one of the numerous ways he will destroy our economy if elected. Tax the corporations, bankrupt energy companies – created skyrocketing electricity rates – spread that wealth to people who do nothing and pay no taxes into the system. Great plan!

At this rate, we’ll all be wearing barrels

  3. Well, I hope this is told over and over again until people get it that Obama just isn’t going to get energy going here in america…he prefers to buy from the arabs, he is beholding to them for contibutions and we are all going to pay for his billion dollar gambit. Imagine! hospitals could have been built for that amount of money! Talk about selfish!!

  4. Not supprised we find this out just days ahead of the election. Besides the S.F.Cronicle, L.A.Times, N.Y.Times, how many other so-called “news media” are holding (hiding) unsavory stories about Obama? The American people can not rely on the news media of today. The truth is out there but it takes time and effoft to find it.

  5. A sound Energy Plan is going to be the key to the success of our economy and our future international policy.

Obama says he wants to ditch nuclear power and now he wants to ditch clean coal! How does he expect to power the nation?

At least McCain has an energy plan!

I do think that we should be tougher on the coal industry because it is a HUGE source of carbon emissions… but that we should become more reliant on nuclear power. We have proven over the past 40 years is that nuclear power in this country is SAFE, CLEAN and RELIABLE.

In the history of commercial nuclear power in the United States, we have not had any real incidents other than Three Mile Island. With that said, TMI was a success story of how our engineered safeguards work as designed. There was no death plume like at Chernobyl, because US engineering anticipated the worst and designed robust containment buildings around our reactors. Chernobyl had only a shed. US reactors are water-moderated, and are self limiting reactors. Chernobyl had a graphite-moderated core, which melted and lost the ability to have water pass thru it to cool itself…. Hence the hydrogen producing graphite fire, which caused the explosion resulting in the world’s worst nuclear disaster.

Since TMI and Chernobyl there have been numerous lessons learned and regulatory changes to reflect the evolving industry. Our nuclear facilities are a SAFE and ENVIRONMENTAL way to produce power.

I feel we should continue to use nuclear power until we find better alternatives. With irreversible global warming at our door step we need to take action now. Taking our country’s nuclear fleet offline will be a huge setback.

Obama is ready to do this, and now take clean coal out of the mix. Where will we get our energy from? You know what that means… Dealing with OPEC and dealing out more CO2!

  6. Off-shore drilling is out too… so what is left?

  7. All power plant workers, Miners, UNITE against Hussien Obama! he will shut down or have us laid off!

  8. Obama’s America is an ENERGY-LESS NATION. We will all go back to living in darkness.

  9. Do not think the desire to “save the planet” by the far left like Obama will stop with the coal industry? Because we the people are so stupid and can’t possibly control our behavior in a “green fashion” many industries who are deemed guilty of not being environmentally sound will be faced with two choices, operate exactly as the environemntalist say or go banckrupt. Obama has every intention of not only controlling business but us as well. Of course it is for the common good of humanity to prevent “global warming”. If Obama wins start knitting the sweaters, you will be told to reduce you thermostat to 60 degrees, pump up the bicycle tires and ride it to work (China), put down that slice of pizza it isn’t made with organic ingredients and will make you fat, etc. You get the picture, control of the masses falls in line with a Marxist worldview. That is just a fact. This Marxist (Obama ) will use the “global warming” nazi’s and his “civillian army” to oversee our compliance.

  10. At least Homeland Security has been honest about who they trust.
Read the email I got from them.

    Hi Mr. M,

I suspect that it would be hard for them to get the courts to allow it’s release. But that is certainly an interesting perspective. I just hope we don’t wake up on Wednesday with him being the President-elect.

  11. I am emailing everyone I know. We live in KY and coal is a major source of income for families here. But, alot of the hardcore Dems are convinced that Barack ‘Hussein’ Obama is ‘fer the workin’ man”! Whatever. I’ve heard that garbage all my life, Dems are not for the working man. If he’s for the working class then why is he wanting to take their jobs?
    Who this hurts??
Miners, Equipment Operators, Coal Truck drivers and owners, tipple and ground workers, Railroad industry, Companies who build mining equipment..families who depend on this income..and every household who needs to keep their lights on! That’s hundreds of thousands of jobs!! Wake up Dems!

  12. From someone that works in the utility industry this is about the most ridiculose comment he could have made but remember where he was and what vote he was trying to win. California and the enviormentalists want to hear this, so again he says whatever will get him the vote.
After being through Hurricane IKE in Houston and hearing the whining from people who were without electricty lets seem them take the baseload out of the system. People dont like not hittting the switch and having electricity and the energy and transmission companies were attacked even though they didnt evacuate with their families and stayed at the plants. lineman worked 14 to 16 hours a day and still people complained. I dont believe anyone liked it up north when the grid went down so lets take energy Capacity offline and see how well a grid can support the demand. Although I guess when you dont have a job you cant pay electricty bills so it wouldnt matter – I forgot since more people dont work we have to tax those that have jobs to help pay their bills even though they would gladly work at their jobs that just got taken away when the coal plants and mines shut down.
Lets look at the Future Gen project of clean coal
“The FutureGen Alliance today praised the full Senate Appropriations Committee for passing legislation that protects $134 million in federal funding slated for FutureGen at Mattoon. The measure was included in the energy and water appropriations bill for fiscal year 2009.”
So wonder who pays this federal funded bill for this plant — thats right the taxpayer will fund this project in a shrinking economy.

  13. The truth about Obama is that he wants to bring this country to a standstill. No jobs, no nuc. energy, no coal energy, no money for the government to operate on, etc. When this country comes to a standstill, we are open for anyone (terrorists or other government) to take over. It is time the people wake up. Start thinking for ourselves. Vote for McCain.!

  14. I too have worked in a coal mine and watched my bosses get fat and rich on my back while my working class family watches jobs go overseas.

The WalMart hear in E. Ky. is closing down because we won’t shop there becaause all their stuff comes from China.

He didn’t say he was going to bankrupt the industry…he just wants cleaner air, and I can tell you having worked for these guys, they have no interest in making clean coal plants, they don’t even care if I die of black lung, as long as they get their profit.

What does matter is my kids and their kids, and the debt the Republicans have laid on us…

I’m a former Rep., working class stiff, and I can tell you I’m voting for the candidate that cares abouut me cary the coal miner… Mr. Obama!

  15. Develop and Deploy Clean Coal Technology.

Obama’s Department of Energy will enter into public private partnerships to develop five “first-of-a-kind” commercial scale coal-fired plants with clean carbon capture and sequestration technology.

[editor’s note: hahahahahaha I doubt it. No offshore drilling, no clean coal… no no no… we must keep shipping our dollars to his buddies in the Middle East, Africa, and South America –Wag the JackA*s]

  16. wow barry you have to be kiddin he does not care for you he only tells you what you want here i am a dem and voting for mccain at least he server is country and care for the country obama the people around him the total leing the aires thing the media bias and all if he gets in you will have a dem white house senate house of reps and there will be no checks and ballances not for me and why hide the coal story the aires thind he also said it let that chuch and there he is with the pastor of that church belive what you want but if he is in we will all suffer i promise you at

  17. Barry, what walmart in E Ky…I’m in Eastern KY.
And, no dear, Hussein Obama does not care about you!!

  18. Hey Barry, Do you know what you are talking about??….I grew up with those coal mines and I don’t know where you live now, but I can tell you one thing ,,,if this Obama gets in , you will be raising your food and chopping wood to keep warm…hope you have lots of trees…..

  19. If you are in the coal mining bizz then vote McCain because Obama has you in his sights to shut you down. PA needs to remember what happened when the steel plant shut down. How many ghost town will Obamas make. If it wasnt for company’s like Phoenix Glass that part of PA would have gone out . You dont kill jobs ,You dont raise taxes and spend more on a weak dollar. YOU CUT TAXES YOU SPEND LESS AND YOU KEEP AMERICANS WORKING.

When he shuts them down not just the states the mines are in will suffer great economic collapse but the state surrounding them. WAKE UP Ohio, Pennsylvania. Wake UP Virgina . WAKE UP AMERICA. The on change he is selling is control .

  20. This is just another fact Obama has tried to hide from the people. PLEASE-PLEASE you in the coal industry, get ahold of all the miners you can. Co., Ohio, Pa., Va., Everywher there are coal mines, and we HAVE to have them for our energy and jobs. He also said electricity would skyrocket. Don’t let the liar get in, and ruin America. We need Coal, Oil, and etc. Let Gov Palin use her energy expertise. STOP Obama.

  21. How can anyone think Obama has our best interest at heart when he knows nothing about an aunt living in poverty right under his nose? A man who makes the kind of money he has made for the past 2 years as a senator who has such a huge heart would have made a point to find out about his family and offer assistant to them or maybe he only wants to spred our wealth around not his own.

  22. Is there a connection between Khalid al Mansour, OPEC, and Obama’s bankrupting America’s Coal Industry?

We all know that Percy Sutton connected Barack to Khalid Al Mansour in a news reel that exposed al Mansour as a proponent of Barack’s entrance to Harvard. A lot of people are stating that Khalid al Mansour works for OPEC. Without doubt, it would be to OPEC’s advantage to bankrupt America’s coal industry. Is this just a conspiracy, a coincidence or do we really have a fox in the hen house?

  23. […] Obama Vows to Shut Down the Coal Industry I guess this means that Coal is not on his list of energy sources.  What does this really mean to the folks who live […] […]

  25. I voted for McCain, and should Mr. O get into office and is allowed to put into place all of his socilalist ideas than the ones who voted for him deserve everything he gives them. Unfortunately a lot of innocent people will suffer along beside them. So now the question is how long will someone leave him in office? But then the next in line would be Biden well he would have to go, too. OMG look who is next Pelosi, well she would have to go, too. So the real question is — who steps in the presidents shoes after Pelosi?
